Activities Committee Report
by Sue Williamson,
Chairman

HAPPY NEW YEAR everyone!  1999 is the year to shine!

Here's the deal!  We're still meeting on Tuesday nights at Radcliff's in the Radisson at I-35 and 87th from 7:30-10:30 PM.  Some of you have favorite tunes you want to hear, so bring them and I'll be glad to play them for you.  Just be sure they are already cued up to your selection or a note with the number selection on a CD so that I don't have to hunt for it.  Also, don't worry about your dance ability; this is a practice session for everyone.

February 12 is our next BIG PARTY!  For a little treat, we're having a special guest of honor; namely, Henre' Bugarin from Las Vegas, who is the original founder and instructor for the Kansas City Swing Dance Club.  Henre' will be giving a couple of free workshops that night also.  Exciting!  This club has gone through many changes since its day of inception with Henre' and details of which will be presented at the party, since this will be our ninth birthday party celebration!

We are also going to try something new this time to sort of turn the tables a little and emphasize the ladies doing the asking of dances by having a DANCE CARD like the good ol' days.  Here's how it works:  each lady who wants to participate (not mandatory, of course) will get a dance card with ten spaces.  She will fill in these spaces with ten fellows she asks to sign her card with his own signature.  When she finishes all her dances with her ten fellows, then she will drop her card in a box to be drawn for a prize.

The object of this is to dance with different people in order to get to know then better and/or to get to dance with someone you were too shy to dance with before.  If you fill your card in with just one or two fellow's names for all ten dances, you won't qualify for the prize.  (by the way, the prize this time will be pretty nice.)  If someone on your card is dancing with someone else when you are ready to dance with him, it is the lady's responsibility to seek him out for the dance he owes her before the evening is over.  We hope NOT to have any wallflowers by either sex with this arrangement.

There will be good food and a HUGE BIRTHDAY CAKE since this party is not only for the club's ninth birthday, but also for everyone in our club who has EVER had a birthday.  Come single or
as a couple, but don't let your partner deter you from participating in the dance card activity for variety, friendship, and just pure fun!

This will be a busy night with some other activities planned also, so try to be on time!  We'll be looking for you!

The founder of the Kansas City Swing Dance Club will be here Friday, February 12 to help us celebrate the ninth anniversary of our club.  Nine years ago, Henre' Bugarin (bu-GAR-in) convened a meeting of a group of dancers that had been attending his Kansas City Swing Club lessons for months, and in some cases, several years.  Henre' was moving to Las Vegas and wanted to help us form a non-profit club.

The meetings in January and February 1990 were at the Filipino House where Henre's dance lessons were held.  Each time he visited Kansas City that spring he taught our West Coast swing lessons at New Country in Olathe.  Henre' now teaches ballroom dancing in a studio in Las Vegas and is proficient in all of the popular dances.  We are honored to have him visit us once more.

January Thursday Night Dance Series with Toi Shaw
   by Bill Posladek, President

6:30-8:00 PM
Beginning review class for Big Band Street Swing.  "Forties" swing as danced in the movie, Swing Kids, and in the bars today.  This is the swing that is currently sweeping the nation and danced to the music of Brian Setzer, Big Bad Voodoo Daddies, etc. )  This class is for swing kids and adults alike.  You must attend this class before continuing to the intermediate class.  (Stay in this class at least one month.)  We will go beyond the basics in this first class, so you will not be bored.  Stay current --keep swinging!

8:00-9:30 PM
Intermediate/Advanced for those who have completed one month of the 6:30-8:00 class/  The instruction in this class will be accelerated, addressing different swing dance rhythms, many pattern variations, as well as some swing lifts.  Enter at your own risk -- it's a real zoot suit riot!  Bring a safety net and a doctor's permit!
