9th Birthday Party Memories
by Sue Williamson, Activities Director; Committee Members: June Rush, Bill Hatton,
Mary Scott, Jim Pettit, Sharlette Rackers, Mike Strong, Ella Crawford, Phil Crawford

Good Job Everyone!  We, the Activity Committee, feel that this was the best party of the year!  We had the best attendance ever (120), and all of you did such a good job of participating and dancing.  Our special guest, Henre Bugarin, said that it was one of the best parties he had been to, including Los Angeles or the two swing clubs he works with in Las Vegas!  To recap a few moments for those of you who were there or for those of you who wished you could have been there, or for those of you who don't know what you missed:

DANCE floor was full every dance, with all levels of dancers.
PICTURES galore by our great volunteer photographers, Mike Strong and Rick Torres.
WORKSHOPS conducted by KCSDC's founder, Henre Bugarin and partner, Maci
EXHIBITIONS by our special guest and partner, Henre and Maci.
MIXERS keeping things rolling for all to enjoy, such as the Barn Dance; the Scotch , Rye & Whiskey mixer; and the Ladies Dance Card, won by Joan Taubin (keep those guys hopping, Joan.)
CAKE with neatest club logo by our very own Jettie Jacob - too cool.
TREATS to "pig out" on, which we did.
MUSIC which is always special because of our own DJ, Phil Crawford
                                                (Editor's{Mary Carrington} note:  Ditto!)
HISTORY of the club's nine years provided by Jewel Siggs, Rick Torres, and June Rush.
DOOR PRIZES which are always fun and free.
HAPPY ambiance for everyone to relax and kick up their heels.

Since most of the food was completely devoured, and
since the dance floor was full every single dance, and
since all the mixers went well, and
since a lot of you didn't seem to want to go home,

we, the Activities committee, feel that you all are catching on to what your membership dues and lessons can do for you.  This is a club, so we deserve to let our hair down and just plain have fun once in awhile!

    Treasurer's Books Examined
    by Daisy McCluskey
                    & Don Brown, Club Members

On January 20, 1999, we examined the books with Evelyn Rose, Treasurer.  Evelyn explained to us how the books were kept and the backup documentation for all entries.  We determined what internal controls were in place and that they were being properly used.  We verified the ending balance on the club's books corresponded with the statement  from the bank and that bank balances had been properly reconciled with bank statements.  We did a spot check to verify that all check numbers had been accounted for.

We found the condition of the books and the bookkeeping system used by Evelyn to be excellent.  Internal controls were excellent and were being properly used.  We commend Evelyn on the excellent condition of the books and her conscientious effort and hard work to see that the books are keep up to date in a timely manner.
(webmaster note:  Gee, is the SAME Daisy McCluskey who is SOO good at decorating the clubhouse?   Boy, does she have talent - she's artistic AND understands bookkeeping!  WOW! - and she's blonde, too!  - those jokes about blondes just DON'T fit Daisy.  What a gal!!

AND NOW for all the bean counters out there (someone called me a bean counter once, but when I took off my shoes to count past 10 they took it back!) here's another one!  (Someone called me a bean counter once, but when I took off my shoes to count past 10 they took it back!)

    $$$  Treasurer's Report   $$$
                        by Evelyn Rose, Treasurer

In addition to the books being verified by Don Brown and Daisy McCluskey, they were verified and approved by the CPA firm of Barrett & Associates for the past year, with all necessary reports completed and filed.

    (Evelyn is just SOO good!)

    Yeah-h-h!
    by Mary Carrington, Publications Director

Did KCSDC members who attended the Beata Howe workshop in Wichita on Saturday, February 6 learn a lot and have fun?  Well, as Beata would say, "Yeah-h-h!"  The Wichita Push Club hosted this four-hour workshop.  Mark Harris and I, as well as Gary and Bev Harris, attended and we all agreed that it was one of the best workshops we had been to because Beata spent most of it on connection and simple, but sharp-looking syncopations on the 5 & 6.  Beata demonstrated all through the workshop how a dancer can look above average without a lot of complicated patterns.  With proper connection and an easy syncopation on the 5 & 6, the simple sugar push or side pass looks exceptional.  The workshop was a good reminder to me that dancing is not just learning patterns;  it's all about the basics --connection and teeny can't lead or follow without those two elements!

The dance after the workshop at the Marriott was, as always, a fun time.  Again, members of the Wichita Push Club, Oz Swing Club (Wichita's newest swing dance club): and Tulsa swing club members danced the night away.  Beata danced with everyone there, asking if you would like to lead or follow.  She was terrific!  We look forward to the Wichita clubs visiting us in the future for our workshops.

Even MORE Big Band Swing Lessons on
    Thursdays in March
    by Gary Harris, Dance Coordinator

7:00-8:00 PM Beginning review class for Big Band Street Swing for swing kids and adults alike! You must attend this class before continuing to the intermediate class. (Stay in this class at least one month.) We will go beyond the basics in this first class, so don't worry about getting bored!)

8:00-9:00 PM Intermediate/Advanced for those who have completed one month of the beginning class. The instructions in this class will be accelerated, addressing different swing dance rhythms, many pattern variations.

9:00-10:00 PM Advanced Street Swing for those graduating from the above two classes and who are ready and able to learn advanced patterns and style.

$3.00 for one class, or $6.00 for all three.

    CUTE Captions
by the Photos in the newsletter:

Mark Harris was heard saying to Beata, "You lead, & I'll follow you anywhere!"

Gary was heard saying the same thing! (Beata certainly had quite a "following!")
